Tom Cruise Joins ‘Star Trek’ Cast?

Is Tom Cruise finally letting his Scientology “couch-jumping” craziness dictate his movie roles, too?
The Mission Impossible actor made a trip to the set of the new Star Trek movie recently, leading fans to believe that the 45-year-old has done the impossible and signed on as a cast member for the sci-fi classic. Crazier things have happened in the world of Tom Cruise, right? He did marry that bint Katie Holmes, after all.
A source on set revealed: “Tom visited the set of the movie and chatted with J.J. Abrams [the director].”
At the moment, his little visit looks more like a social call than a casting call (he and Abrams are friends from his MI:3 days), but Cruise has fooled us all before — he was seen on the set of Tropic Thunder, a film he wasn’t signed on for, and then appeared in the movie in a small role.
The reason Cruise called on his friend, or so the story goes, is that he’s hoping Abrams can snag him an audience with Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock in the Star Trek films eons ago. Apparently Cruise is a huge fan of the sci-fi franchise, and of Mr. Spock in particular.
“He asked J.J. if there’s a way he can meet Leonard Nimoy. He said he’d always really respected his work,” the source added.
Star Trek will appear in theatres in the U.S. summer of 2009. Perhaps we’ll end up seeing Cruise in the background on one of the star ships wearing an ‘I Love Leonard Nimoy’ badge and a pair of Spock ears? Er.. maybe not.
