Spears Cleans Up With Seven MTV Award Nominations

Britney Spears has cemented herself in the role as the biggest ever come-back queen, nabbing seven nominations at this year’s MTV Awards.

While seven noms isn’t quite the record this year – both Lady Gaga and Beyonce have nine apiece – it’s made even more remarkable, given Spears’ disastrous return to the VMA stage just two years ago.

I’m sure no one could forget Spears’ half-assed, drunken attempt at performing in 2007. At the time, she was ridiculed to the nth degree and labeled as a lost cause, but the pop star bounced back – thanks in no small part to the conservatorship put in place by her father – and is now leading the pack once again.

It is not known yet whether Brit will perform at this year’s awards ceremony – let’s face it, after Vegas, it’s highly unlikely. Those stars already on the roster include country music sensation Taylor Swift, Australia’s favourite Pink, and rockers Green Day and Muse.

Russell Brand will again play host, with the VMA’s going live from New York’s Radio City Music Hall on September 13.

Paris Hilton: “I’m No Airhead Slut!”

Paris Hilton has revealed that she’s tired of being referred to as an “airhead slut,” insisting that if she does come across as stupid and slutty, it’s because she’s simply acting up for the cameras.

In her new documentary, Paris, Not France, which airs on MTV on Tuesday, Hilton explains that there’s more to her than meets the eye, and also tackles the embarrassing topic of “that sex tape” she made with ex-boyfriend, Rick Salomon.

Hilton said of her clueless appearance: “In a way it’s good [to seem stupid], but I also don’t want people thinking of me as this blonde heiress… airhead.

“But that is kind of my brand. I make a lot of money by [acting like an airhead].”

However, Hilton admitted that her “brand” would forever by tarnished by the leaking of her infamous sex tape, which she’d made in private with then-beau, Rick Salomon (coincidentally, one of Pamela Anderson’s ex-husbands). Hilton said that while she’s always hoped to be Princess Diana-like, she understands that she could never receive the same accolades as the late British royal, as it’s all because of the sex tape that never should have happened.

“I always looked up to Princess Diana and all these women, and now I could never be like that,” Paris laments in the documentary. “I want to have a family. I want to be normal. I want to be happy.”

Instead, she added, “[I have to worry about people] thinking I’m a slut and thinking I’m something that I’m not.”

At least she has the knowledge of Michael Jackson naming his daughter after her to keep her warm at night.

‘TRL’ Canned

MTV’s hit show, Total Request Live, has been canned after 10 years on the air.

Executive producer Dave Sirulnick made the announcement earlier today, saying that the music video countdown show would conclude “in a two-hour special” on an as yet unspecified Saturday in November. Sirulnick was quick to point out that the show “wasn’t ending for good,” it was just taking an indefinite break.

TRL debuted on MTV in September 1998 and fast became one of pop culture’s hottest show, hosting famed acts such as Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys and N’Sync.

Spears to Open MTV Awards

Britney Spears will open this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, despite last year’s embarrassing performance, which saw her ridiculed across the globe.

“MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs?” Spears told People.com in a statement. “I’m excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated.”

Fans are already concerned as to how Brit Brit is planning on opening the show – another failed musical number could just ruin her flailing career – however, a source close to the star has confirmed that the opening segment “will not feature” a musical performance by Britney.

MTV’s Music President Van Toffler added: “Britney has done everything from perform with a snake, lock lips with Madonna and prove that what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas. I can’t wait to see what she does to kick off this year’s show.”

The VMA’s for 2008 will premiere on Sunday at 9 p.m.

Katy Perry to Kiss Lindsay Lohan?

Wanted: one open-minded (and preferably hot) female celebrity to kiss singer Katy Perry at this year’s VMA’s.

Yes, it’s true! According to a source, MTV are desperate to make the most of Katy Perry’s smash-hit song, I Kissed a Girl, and are hoping to repeat the shock lip-locking that took place between Madonna and Britney Spears a few years ago.

While a decision hasn’t been made just yet, the celeb on the top of MTV’s list is rumoured lesbian actress, Lindsay Lohan.

“Producers are really working hard on it,” a source revealed. “They’d love it to be Lindsay, and they’re actually going to ask.”

I don’t know why they’re bothering. It’s not like Lindsay’s going to want to have a pash with Perry on live television, especially not when she’s put in a lot of effort denying those lesbian claims that keep popping up everywhere.

Maybe MTV should give Courtenay Semel or Tila Tequila a call instead? I’m sure they’d be up for a bit of girl-on-girl tonsel-hockey.

Selma Blair made an appearance on MTV’s TRL wearing… well, I’m not quite sure what you’d call that, actually… The words “what the hell was she thinking” certainly come to mind.

At least the outfit she wore to the Hellboy II premiere in Los Angeles was a little less ridiculous…

Megan Fox Spills Transformers 2 Secrets

From the set of the new Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie, actress Megan Fox sat down with MTV to spill a few secrets on just what fans can expect the second time around.

“As big as the first movie was, this is 10 times as big, 10 times as many set pieces, explosions, and acrobatic stunts,” Fox gushed. “Shia and I make out a little bit; I don’t know if anyone wants to see that.”

I’m betting a few people might.

Fox added that the “blossoming romance” between Sam [Shia LaBeouf] and her character Mikaela is one of many plotlines that will star in the new film. However, nothing is set in stone at this point, as Fox admitted the script was currently in the middle of an extensive re-working.

The official release of the cinematic version Stephenie Meyer’s literary smash Twilight may still be six months away, but those wonderful folks at MTV have given us fans a little snippet to mull over while we wait – and the clip doesn’t disappoint!

In the exclusive scene, which aired during tonight’s MTV Awards, we get a glimpse of the epic final duel between good vampire Edward Cullen and the evil James.

The film, which is due for release on December 12, stars Kristen Stewart and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire actor, Robert Pattison.
