A new book written by Princess Diana biographer, Andrew Morton, claims that Nicole Kidman was blackmailed into keeping secrets about former husband, Tom Cruise’s controversial religion, Scientology.
The book claims that Kidman’s relationship with her children was threatened by high-ranking Scientologists if she ever decided to speak out against them after her marriage to Cruise failed in 2000.
A once devout Scientologist (who is said to be the main source behind the unofficial Cruise biography) told Morton that Nicole’s lawyer, Bill Beslow, said that his client “hated” the religion by the time her divorce to Cruise went through.
The book states that Kidman “agreed not to speak out against the religion” for fear of losing contact with her two adoptive children. Morton alleges that the Scientologists also threatened to reveal the most intimate details of her sex life with Cruise, should she ever decide to comment on the religion.  ÂÂ
“At this point Nicole hated Scientology but was concerned for the kids,” the Scientologist told Morton.
“She did not want to ruin her relationship with them.
“I told the lawyer if she wants to stay with the children she will have to be quiet and not speak out about Scientology.”
Morton goes on to make further claims regarding Cruise’s invovlement in the religion, calling the Top Gun actor the “de-facto second in charge within the Church of Scientology.”ÂÂ
He also explained that the Church was the main factor behind the split of Tom and Nicole, and made hints towards Scientology forcing Cruise to divorce her. A year before their break-up, Cruise supposedly took part in a “potential trouble source/suppressive person” course, something Scientologists do to help them discover who is creating “problems” in their life.
“The fear was that a lukewarm Nicole could fatally compromise Tom’s commitment to his faith,” the book said.
The main concern the Church had for Kidman’s involvement with Cruise was her devotion to the Catholic Church and her father’s practice in psychology.
Cruise has since denied all of the claims made in the book, calling the publication “a bunch of lies.” Scientology lawyers are currently preparing to sue the publishers.
