Natalie Portman Proves You Can Have Brains & Beauty

Actress Natalie Portman, one half of the female talent in new flick The Other Boleyn Girl, proves that you can have brains and beauty at the same time.
The Harvard graduate gave an in-depth interview to U.K.’s Marie Claire magazine recently, discussing her “intellectual actress” label, as well as her change to a vegan diet.
Portman said of her intellectual label: “I can be pretentious and talk about books for hours, but I’m not hyper-intellectual or anything. I mean, I like to read, but lots of people do. I’m not the hard, brainy girl at all. I’m really mushy. [Laughs.] I’m much more mush, I think, than anything else!”
The 26-year-old star, who’s made a name for herself in the industry after appearing in the three Star Wars prequels, graduated from Harvard University in 2003 with a psychology degree. She can also speak fluent Hebrew, a nod to her Israeli-born father.
While she enjoys reading, and is an activist for many political and ethnic issues across the globe, Nat’s also very passionate about animals, and has been a vegetarian because of her love for them for many years. However, for ten days prior to when this interview was conducted, Portman has changed from being vegetarian to vegan, a change she blames Tobey Maguire for.
“I was around Tobey Maguire in rehearsals [for upcoming film Brothers],” Nat explained, “and he’s vegan and I was, like, this is nice. I’m honest about caring about animals. You know, eggs and milk products, there’s a lot of animal discomfort in that, too. I don’t know if it’s a permanent thing.”
