Tom Cruise finally committed the ultimate Hollywood sin. It wasn’t jumping on Oprah’s couch like a crazy man, verbally attacking a pregnant and depressed Brooke Shields, berating Matt Lauer or trashing the entire field of psychiatry. It was losing someone big money. Which, when you think about it, is the only sin that matters.
In Hollywood, you can be a tequila-soaked driver who makes anti-Semitic remarks (Mel Gibson), a dope fiend who breaks into a stranger’s home and falls asleep (Robert Downey Jr.), a gun-toting twice-busted obscenity-spewing wild man (Martin Lawrence), or a bongo-banging naked pot-smoker (Matthew McConaughey) and still get work. Heck, you can even marry your lover’s adopted daughter (Woody Allen). Just don’t lose money for your studio.
