US “Kath & Kim” Slammed by Critics

The American version of hit Australian comedy Kath & Kim has failed abysmally, with advance reviews labelling the remake as “jaw-droppingly awful”.
TV commentator Tim Goodman told the San Francisco Chronicle that the much-hyped NBC version of the show was possibly the worst remake America has ever produced.
“The first two episodes of Kath & Kim… were jaw-dropping in their awfulness,” Goodman said.
“[The show is] a fantastically funny Australian comedy that goes into the record books on these shores as a contender for worst remake ever.”
“(The show is) a fantastically funny Australian comedy that goes into the record books on these shores as a contender for worst remake ever.”
He added: “The American version misses the mark so badly that it’s barely recognisable as a distant cousin to the original.”
Goodman also had criticism for the show’s lead actresses, Molly Shannon [Kath] and Hellboy’s Selma Blair [Kim], who he said “lacked the well-drawn humour” of the show’s original portrayers, Jane Turner and Gina Riley.
“Shannon is able to get down some of the tackiness, translated to American mall culture,” Goodman said, “but misses pretty much all the other Kathisms.”
“Blair’s Kim is merely stock poutiness and insincere anger, it all goes nowhere.”
Another reviewer, Glen Walker from the website Welcome to Hell, had something slightly more scathing to say about Shannon and Blair’s performances.
“The three leads are at best uninteresting and at worst annoying and nerve-grating, I hated this,” Walker said.
Kath & Kim, the US version, premieres in the States on NBC Thursday, and on the Seven Network in Australia this Sunday. But with reviews like that, I wouldn’t expect many people would be bothered to tune in, if only to laugh hysterically at how extraordinarily LAME it all is.

Selma Blair’s Friends Have Big Lesbian Crushes On Her

Selma Blair is surprised that many of her friends have big lesbian crushes on her.
Selma, who has never had any off-screen hot girl-on-girl action, but has locked lips on-screen with some hot chicks, including Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions, has aroused the interests of many of her friends.
She told Playboy magazine:
“I have done three girl-on-girl kisses on-screen. And, yet, I’ve never experimented in real life. When lesbian friends tell me they’re in love with me after our friendship has been cemented, it always shocks me.”
Selma revealed that she practiced her lesbian sex scenes in private with ‘Heroes’ star Stana Katic and said:
“We rehearsed our love scene quite a bit in a private room together. We both looked at the bed, looked at each other and walked into the room and went at it.”
If they had that on film, it would probably rate better then the movie.
Preview of U.S. ‘Kath & Kim’

The U.S. version of Kath & Kim is almost upon us, and NBC has released a special preview to get everyone excited.
It didn’t work. While I’m a fan of the two female leads in their own right – I’m thinking of Selma Blair’s bang-up job in Cruel Intentions when I say that – neither of the actresses really manages to capture the essence of what their characters are about.
I mean, it’s Americans attempting to pull off Australian humour. Enough said.

What Was She Thinking?

Selma Blair made an appearance on MTV’s TRL wearing… well, I’m not quite sure what you’d call that, actually… The words “what the hell was she thinking” certainly come to mind.
At least the outfit she wore to the Hellboy II premiere in Los Angeles was a little less ridiculous…
More shots of Selma in her kooky ensemble after the jump.

Actress Selma Blair wore her serious face when she attended the premiere of her new movie, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, in Los Angeles over the weekend.
In the film, which is based on the graphic novel series of the same name, Blair reprises her role of the firestarter, Liz Sherman.
More shots of Blair looking super-impressed to be at her own premiere are available after the jump.

“I had long hair for a while. Almost down to my waist but I wanted to go back to my Tom Cruise cut. I told my hairdresser to shave the back and leave the front long. Then someone thought I was Tom from the back. I guess I’d better wear heels.”
– American actress Selma Blair doesn’t like being mistaken for Tom Cruise. It’s not that you look like a man Selma, it’s the other way around… ÂÂ
