After three months together, Kate Hudson and former athlete Lance Armstrong have called it quits.

“There was no drama or ugliness – they just decided to end things,” a source said.

“There is no hatred, just sadness.”

Hudson and Armstrong created a media frenzy back in May, when they were spotted holidaying together in Austin, Texas, shortly after rumours of the Almost Famous star’s engagement to actor Owen Wilson had surfaced.

Those rumours later turned out to be false, and Hudson split from Wilson, though in the past three months, neither she nor Armstrong have ever officially confirmed the existence of their relationship.

Reps for both parties refused to comment on the split.

After their attempted secret romantic getaway to Austin last weekend, Kate Hudson and Lance Armstrong decided to go public with their new relationship, and were seen dancing and kissing the night away at Dolce & Gabanna’s annual Cannes bash.

The pair spent the evening kissing and dancing to old Madonna songs and other 80’s tracks, with a source saying that the new couple “only had eyes for each other” in the packed VIP room.

“They were beaming at each other,” the source added. “So cute.”

Other stars who attended Friday night’s VIP party included Cannes juror Natalie Portman, Lindsay Lohan (minus girlfriend Samantha Ronson), and temperamental supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Looks like Kate and Lance are no longer bothered if people know they’re together. The happy couple, who’ve been secretly dating for some time now, were spotted in Austin on both Friday and Saturday nights during their romantic weekend getaway.

An insider has confirmed to People: “They came in [Friday] and had dinner together, it’s true.”

On Friday, they had an intimate dinner for two at high-end restaurant Eddie V’s, which Armstrong is said to frequent. Saturday night saw Hudson enjoy a casual family dinner at Hula Hut, with the Tour de France winning athlete, his three children, and a group of friends.

“They came in with the kids and a large group of people,” a restaurant on-looker said. “They ordered dinner – tacos, burgers and fries and that sort of stuff.”

Another source added: “They looked like they were having fun.”

Kate, who was suspected of being engaged to Owen Wilson just over a week ago, split with her on-again, off-again You, Me and Dupree co-star a day before rumours of her relationship with Armstrong surfaced on the net.

Both Hudon’s and Armstrong’s reps have refused to comment on the budding relationship.

“They’ve been dating quietly for a few weeks now,” the source revealed today.

While they’ve been extra careful and haven’t actually been seen out anywhere together, the new couple have flown together on a private jet from NYC to Austin, where they are planning to spend a romantic weekend together away from the prying eyes of the press.

I guess this means Kate Hudson has well and truly moved on from her split with Owen Wilson…

Lancy Boy Armstrong and Matty McConaughey are claiming that they have not taken their friendship to the next level and crossed into Brokeback Mountain territory.

“We tried it. Wasn’t for us,” McConaughey jokes to Details magazine in a new interview that addresses rumors about them – and pal Jake Gyllenhaal – being gay.

Lancy says his newly-close relationship with Matty grew out of the fact that they were both suddenly single at the same time. McConaughey had broken up with actress Penelope Cruz and Armstrong had called off his engagement to singer Sheryl Crow.

“Our friendship just kind of developed,” the cycling champ tells the magazine for its November issue. “He got out of a relationship; I’d just gotten out of a relationship.”

I wonder if their first date was to see mate Jake Gyllenhaal’s movie?

Armstrong, who has known McConaughey for eight years, stresses that despite the raised-eyebrows they’ve gotten due to photos of them – often shirtless – biking, running and partying together, they are just buddies.

“I think people see pictures and they think we’re these overgrown frat guys, but we all have those kinds of relationships – and relationship isn’t a bad word,” says Armstrong. “I mean, we all have buds, we all take guy trips, but you take something very normal and you put it in a magazine, and people start talking. ” Well they haven’t been caught playing pin the tail on the donkey!

He goes on to say, “It’s like, either you sleep with anything that moves or you’re gay. They can’t figure it out.”

McConaughey goes further to defend their relationship saying, “A lot of people don’t understand friendship and brotherhood (and manlove?). I have a great friend in him. I’d do anything he asked me to, even though he’d probably never ask me to, and he feels the same way. It’s fun going out and living life and doing things at the drop of a hat. LiveStrong just happens to be the most deliberate guy I’ve ever met.”

Armstrong, 35, calls McConaughey, 36, the “Redneck Buddha,” and says the actor’s laid back style has been a good influence on him – especially when it comes to gossip. “His idea is like, ‘Look, it is what it is, so go out there and have fun.’ He’s truly carefree – which is to say, he truly doesn’t care.”
